Objectives

  • Collecting stories on how practitioners have built ownership and empowerment.

Instructions

  1. Think of a time when in your practice there was an activity you facilitated/saw where the young people absolutely smashed it in terms of building ownership and empowerment - what environment was set up? What were the key ingredients that enabled their ownership and empowerment?
  2. Person A takes four minutes to tell their “smashed it” story.

Person B: actively listening is drawing out the themes and writes one theme per post-it note.

  1. At the four minute mark ask Person B to share the themes that emerged from Person A’s story.
  2. Swap - Person B now has four minutes to tell their “smashed it” story while Person A takes notes - one theme per post-it
  3. At the end of the ten mins ask both people to take their top five themes.
  4. In groups share a little bit about your story and the themes that your partner drew out.
  5. After everyone has shared, get the groups to theme all of their collective post-it notes into the top 5 themes - give all groups one colour of post-it note to write their top 5 themes.
  6. Invite each group to share their “smashed it” themes on ownership and empowerment.

Facilitator notes

  • For audiences that don’t work directly with young people the “smashed it” stories can be altered to be times where a team or group they were part of smashed a project or task together. We are really keen to understand what motivated and empowered them to ‘smash it’. So that we can try and repeat the envuiroment and catalysts in other parts of their work.
